Eurovision nightGot myself some ice cream and will be making myself compfy on the sofa so I'm ready for the big, glittery, horrible music, camp, pointless politics, drama that is eurovision. It never disappoints me.

Sadly I will be alone for this one. Matt had to do a concert he didn't want to do, so I will be live tweeting (humonlazydiva) my impression of the whole shebang.

The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

I am the Master, your Mentor.

1. Thou shalt have no hobbies before Art.

2. Thou shalt study from life.

3. Thou shalt not steal from your fellow artist.

4. Thou shalt judge your own art harshly.

5. Thou shalt teach yourself by teaching others and give constructive criticisms.

6. Thou shalt watch what you say / do. (Because the art community is way smaller than you think).

7. Thou who draws digitally shall not fear the pencil. Thou who draws traditionally shall not fear the tablet.

8. Thou shalt not take a long time or be lazy with commissions.

9. Thou shalt not draw furry porn. : P

10. Thous shalt abandon any form of social life. *thanks

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I really believe there should be one in reference to not shying away from backgrounds. Or learning perspective. Too many artist hand wave it away, like they can some how become a great manga artist while avoiding to learn these things.
