Hi guys!

Okay so I found a really good deal on two BJDs and I'm thinking about buying them for my mother for Christmas. See I've been debating buying her one for a while because my mother is really good at sewing doll clothes. I was thinking that I could help her get started selling BJD clothes online.

Here is my problem -
I personally know SO LITTLE about BJDs

The dolls are elf BJDs -
larger is a bobobie mei elf girl 43CM
smaller is a sleepelf bobobie sculpt 12 inches tall

----- Are these common BJD sizes that if my mother did sew clothes for them she would be able to sell them to other BJD collectors and they would fit their BJDs?

----- Do you think my mom would even be able to sell BJD clothes at all? Is there much of a market for this?

----- The dolls come nude with wigs and eyes - and I believe they already have face-up. Is that all my mother would need to start creating clothes for them?

Thank you so much for any information!

Forgot about this! DenverDoll Emporium [link] is a US dealer that sells Bobobie. They're wonderful to work with PLUS you don't pay crazy shipping fees. If you can, I'd consider going through them.

Apologies for not remembering that sooner. A friend of mine ordered her Bobobie Lan through DDE and reminded me about it last night when I went to see her.

Hey curry! I've owned a BJD for about a year now (officially yesterday) but I've been into them for about 5 years.

Bobobie is a fun/nice company! But, while they're on the cheaper spectrum, they're also no really standard sizes.

43 to 45cm is a standard "MSD"size. MSDs are a mid-range size dolls and are fairly common. The only problem is that Bobobi's MSD dolls are SUPER thin and SUPER tiny.

My friend owns one, and compared to my own MSD (who is 43cm) and another friend's MSD (who is 45cm) Mei is so delicate and small. Our dolls' clothes just hang like bags on her.

If your mom is doing clothes, she'd have to be able to adjust for such small bodies to much larger bodies. Bobobie size MSDs are still considered in the
slim MSD category — along with Fairyland MiniFee and Unoa Quluts. These are mostly around 43cm in height and have slimmer bodies.

Other companies carry between 43-45cm but their bodies are more robust with larger chests, buts and overall more weight throughout the body. I switched out bodies on my current MSD doll from a 43cm Souldoll body to the 43cm Fairyland body and was shocked at how much tinier she became because of it. All of her old clothes had to be taken in.

As to the 30cm/12inch Bobobie — I've not really heard of that as a common size. 26cm "child-like" dolls seem to be really really popular (such as Fairyland's LittleFee dolls). Actually, I can't find the sleepelf sculpt anywhere on their site, but I do see a 27cm sized doll. While they're super cute, the problem is that they don't seem to have the "child-like" body that most other 26-27cm sized BJDs have.

I just want to say that I have no problem with any of these dolls, but if your mom is just getting into the hobby to sell clothes then Bobobie probably has the least-common size of dolls.

THE OTHER OPTION, is to find people with different size dolls online and ask them if they'd be willing to make duct tape dress forms and then ship them to your mom. They're super easy to make and she'd be able to do a whole bunch of doll sizes rather than just one and have a decent idea if the clothes will fit or not.

As to "what you need" If you have pastels, acrylics, and some tiny brushes at home, AND you'd be interested in it, you could always try doing the face-up yourself! I love custom faceups so much more than factory ones. The only other thing you'd need to buy would be sealant like MSC or Testors DullCote (the second of which is available at many craft stores in the USA, the first which you need to order online).

But, if you're not interested in that, then wig eyes and face will do it. Maybe some shoes if your Mom isn't interested in making shoes. :D

Good luck! Feel free to ask me any questions! I'll be happy to help.

HOLY FREAKING CRAP this is the most beautiful comment I have ever seen in my life! Thank you sooo much for taking the time to give me all of this information!

Hmmm maybe I will just try the duct tape thing at first to see if my Mom would even like to do it in the first place haha! The only problem I can see with that is that there would be no "model" to sell the clothes on. But its not a huge drawback.

Maybe I could buy them and she could have them as well as the duct tape thing.... HMMM. It's a lot to think about.

I do have another question! They are asking $160 shipped for the two - which sounds good to me. Does that sound fair to you? I've been looking at them for myself for a long time and was just too scared to get one for the price because I just know the second I touch it I would mess something up XD. (I'm sooo clumsy). And my lack of knowledge of the dolls has always really frightened me with them.

My mom recently got some of those really old ball-joint dolls from like... France ... or.... Russia? I don't even know - and seeing a ball-joint doll in person made me feel a little better about their durability. But if these two are really slim /// oh man probably not a good idea for my mom or me XD. haha.

woowww but seriously, thank you so much for all of this information! I owe you big time!

Ahaha, no problem. I got into BJDs for the creation aspect - painting, clothing, etc — and not so much for the "play with dolls" aspect, so I feel like these were a lot of what I thought about as I was getting my first doll too.

About the shipping - I'm not quite sure what you mean. I know from Korea to Ohio, USA for an order around USD $558 (I ordered with three other people) the final total with shipping ended up being USD $591 — so $33 for shipping.

Is the $160 the final price or is it how much you're paying for shipping entirely? That seems a bit much. If you're alright with it, send me the links to what you planned on purchasing and I can double check it for you (since we're both in the USA, our shipping prices should be the same).

Bobobie tends to string their dolls REALLY loosely to reduce the risk of damage while shipping (usually in the form of a snapped hand/foot or cracked arm/leg. I've yet to see a Bobobie have those problems though while shipping. They also come wrapped snuggly in a pillow so they're cushioned on the trip to you! But they are pretty durable. In fact, the most risk is scratches on the faceup - which the pillow helps protect from as well.

Having a doll to show off the clothes is nice but there are TONS of people on etsy that just show the dress without the doll. Or, if someone orders a dress, ask for the sizes based on standard sewing measurements (bust, waist, hips... you know, provide the chart and all). I however, am horrible with that so I need a dress form to work off of. The one I have for my girl and the one I have for my friends larger MSDs works beautifully.

Again, I do recommend Den of Angels forum because if your mom is on there long enough she can sell through the "clothes and wigs" marketplace on DoA. I don't but a lot of stuff off ebay or etsy - 90% of the clothes and stuff I have bought has been purchased through DoA marketplace. We have a feedback system and everything too so it's really easy to see if people have flaked or anything. You can even show your work on DoA but link to the etsy or ebay listing if that would make your mom more comfortable. But she'd probably get more business through DoA. I'd sign up sooner than later as there are marketplace stipulation (which I just now checked) - you have to be a member for 180 days (6 months) and have at least 100 posts to open up a commission thread. However, you only need to have 25 days and 40 posts to open up just a pre-made sale thread (so any outfits that are already made and ready to sell).

The good thing about DoA is that you can bombard the forum with questions and get help if something DOES happen to go wrong with your doll (which will happen on occassion). You can see what things to do and not do with them (ie: don't leave them out in the sun since the resin will turn yellow or green), how to restring if you need to clean them, and products that should never be anywhere near your resin (like sharpie marker). )

So yeah, let me know about shipping since I wasn't quite sure what the $160 included or didn't include. And yeah, I think doing that AND getting duct tape dress forms would work out nicely!

((There's also a thread on DoA called "cheap affordable dolls" or something like that if you're maybe looking for other options. Bobobie was the only one I knew of for a long time before I found that thread and it really opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities.)
